ELYSIAN’s Guide to Fall Beauty Using the Healthy & Eco-Friendly Cosmetics from Tarte
No Shower Happy Hour
As one season drifts into another, our bodies undergo subtle shifts, reflecting the natural world around us. It’s the perfect time to assess your self-care regimen and make adjustments as needed for the season ahead. Have you ever noticed that fall is the busiest season of the year? School functions, cultural events, get-togethers with friends. Let’s face it, sometimes there just isn’t space in the agenda for a shower after the gym. Yep, we said it. But we know we’re not the only ones thinking it, because the folks at Tarte concocted a whole grooming kit “No Shower Happy Hour” for busy people like us. It’s got five vegan beauty staples (deodorant, dry shampoo, moisturizer, lip paint and blush) which will have you shower-fresh sans shower. ($34, tartecosmetics.com)
Not that we don’t take cleansing seriously. Because we do. Seriously. Fall is an excellent time to rejuvenate your skin, now that the harshest glare of the sun has moved to the Southern Hemisphere. We love Tarte’s Frxxxtion Stick 3-in-1 exfoliating cleanser. It feels a little strange at first to smear dark sludge on your face as part of your cleansing routine, but once you get used to the gentle exfoliating action of said dark sludge, it’s hard to imagine what life was like pre-sludge. ($22, tartecosmetics.com)
Tarte’s Deep Dive Cleansing Gel is a gentle daily face wash which effortlessly strips away the grime of the day. We like to use it with the cutie scrubber. We’re not sure if that thing helps slough away the grime or just makes washing more fun, but either way, it’s a winner.
Our eye makeup never seems to come off completely when we wash our face, hello waterproof mascara. But Tarte’s eye makeup remover wipes take away the remaining vestiges of our kohl liner without irritating or drying the delicate skin around the eyes because it’s got Maracuja oil in it. ($4, tartecosmetics.com)
Speaking of Maracuja, what the heck is it? It’s powerful antioxidant which has become the darling of the beauty world, popping up in hair conditioners, skin moisturizers, cleansers and serums. Maracuja is an oil extracted from the seeds of passion fruits, and it contains loads of vitamin c, phosphorus and calcium which help protect your skin from damage and might even roll back the preliminary effects of sun exposure and aging. Best of all, Maruja oil doesn’t clog pores or exacerbate acne and actually helps prevent breakouts on acne-prone skin.
If might feel strange to spread oil on your face (haven’t we been trying to tame our oily skin all these years?), but start with a few drops on moist, clean skin and see where it takes you. Tarte has a limited edition Maracuja oil with gold flecks which we’re kind of obsessed with. ($50, tartecosmetics.com)
We also love the Maracuja Neck Treatment and Brighter Eye Treatment. It’s got us feeling all moisturized and yep, golden for fall. (Neck Treatment, $44, tartecosmetics.com ; Eye Treatment, $38, tartecosmetics.com)
Even if you’ve been dedicated to applying your SPF facial moisturizer all summer, you might find that your skin’s tone has deepened slightly from sun exposure. And as we hasten toward winter, you may decide that a lighter foundation is a closer match. Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation comes in 40 shades, so a high-performing, easy-blending, good-for-your-skin foundation is definitely on the table this fall. ($39, tartecosmetics.com)
We admit that we were kind of late to the contour and highlight game. It seemed sooooo complicated at first and a little excessive. But you don’t have to spend hours in the mirror, or end up looking like an 80s scream queen when you’re just trying to get your cheekbones to pop a little. You can read Elysian’s Highlighting Guide here.
But in the meantime, we’ll keep it really simple: Put Tarte’s Don’t Be Afraid to Dazzle highlighter on the bridge of your nose and apple of your cheeks, and under your chin, in the hollows of your cheeks and along the sides of your nose. Blend. No, really, we mean it: blend. And when you’ve got no visible seams left, you’re done! ($30, tartecosmetics.com)
Getting back into our boots and sweaters is as much a part of autumn as trying a new shade of eyeshadow or lipstick. Our favorite eye palettes are chock full of shimmering beiges and browns, like Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea which has everything you need for subtle day looks and dramatic night looks. Bonus: the golden compact will beautify your makeup bag as much as its shadows will flatter your face. When it comes to lipstick, burgundy is the way to go. We love Tarte’s Drench Lip Splash Lipstick because it’s richly pigmented and also deeply moisturizing. Double thumbs up. (Eyeshadow, $36, tartecosmetics.com ; Lip Splash, $22, tartecosmetics.com)
