ELYSIAN’s Favorite Summer Workout is Like a Nightclub Without a Bar

It’s summer, so if you feel like spending less time doing your usual stretch-strength-cardio at the gym then you’re totally excused. In a perfect world, you’d be doing your workouts in the glorious outdoors, right? But let’s face it, getting up at the crack of dawn for a jog before the sun peaks isn’t always in line with the other obligations in your life.
Rest assured: bootcamping at daybreak isn’t the only way to be fit.
Our favorite new workout is the cardio-dance class with a live DJ from 305Fitness. It is less about grinding through reps to get ripped, and more about unbridled, enthusiastic FUN (channeled through some bangin’ choreography).
Kind of like a nightclub without the bar, 305Fitness was founded by Sadie Kurzban in 2014, and named for the area code in Miami where she grew up. She began teaching fitness classes while attending Brown, and a new business incubator program at the university helped her get the company off the ground. 305Fitness now has locations in New York, Boston, Washington, and Los Angeles, with plans to continue expanding across the country.
Kurzban’s growing fanbase isn’t just motivated by the DJs and the choreo. It’s the vibe: a body-positive, culturally diverse, supportive community that rallies around the mantra #makesweatsexy. In other words, even if you’re completely lacking in dance ability, 305Fitness is a great way to get a serious workout. All you have to do is show up and try. They have special classes for beginners so you can get into the groove at your own pace. And if you feel clueless for the first few classes, don’t feel bad. Most 305-ers scamper through about five classes before they feel like they’re totally on beat. And if there’s no 305Fitness in your city, check them out on social media, turn off the lights, turn up the AC, blast your favorite song, and dance like no one’s watching.
Having the right workout gear helps set the tone for your workout. Our picks for the best shirts, bras, sneakers and bottoms for a cardio-dance workout.
Whether you want to emblazon your chest with a favorite mantra, or wear garments that wick away sweat, our favorite fitness tops have you covered.
305Fitness “Make Sweat Sexy” T-Shirt
Yep, you will sweat all through the class, and sure, that’s sexy. Why not?
There is not enough clinical research available to know for sure, but anecdotal evidence suggests that this t-shirt will attract positive people and repel Negative Nancy’s.
Sure, you can try to jump around and get sweaty in this top, but the Climacool fabric will wick away the perspiration as soon as you expel it.
Bodyism I Am Starry Stretch Top
A built-in bra makes the I Am Starry a multi-tasker. But if you want extra support, you can wear it over a sports bra.
Fendi Mesh-Paneled Stretch Tank
What did the fashionista wear to the gym? A Fendi Mesh-Paneled Tank, of course! And there are matching shorts, too.
You can wear a fitness bra as a shirt, or perhaps your shirt has a built-in bra? If you ask us, nothing’s been the same since Brandi Chastain hit that penalty kick during the Women’s World Cup in 1999 (and that’s a good thing).
If Natori’s Zen Contour bra seems too pretty to provide serious support, it’s just because there are too many ugly sports bras in the world.
Adjustable shoulder straps, Coolmax fabric, and a pull-over design make Skarlett’s sport bra a keeper.
Beyond Yoga’s Racerback design in nylon/spandex provides the right balance of comfort, support and style for a medium-impact workout.
You know all the choreography, and you’ve become a 305Fitness regular. So make sure your bra can keep up with your every move.
Yoga? Dance cardio? Sprinting? Bootcamp? Bring it. The Nike Adapt Sports Bra is designed to provide comfy support for any workout from low impact to non-stop bounce.
Now that everyone’s wearing sneakers with skirts, slacks and sundresses in our athleisure-ruled universe, one question remains: what is appropriate footgear for a workout? Sneakers, of course. Just be sure to avoid platforms, wedge heels, or anything heavy, inflexible or overly adorned.
Nike’s retro Air Unit sole will make you feel like you’re dancing on a cloud.
Ortholite insole. Boost tech sole. Stretch knit upper. Adidas Ultraboost are the sneakers of your dreams.
APL’s sneakers are so bouncy and energizing, that when you wear them, you get that feeling that you HAVE to move, like when you hear your favorite song at a party. (Or in your headphones at the office. Hello, secret chairdancer.)
Back in the day, people used to wear Tretorns to play tennis. So if they could stand up to Billie Jean King on the court, they can stand up to you in the gym.
We can’t say for sure whether these sneakers will make you swifter. But we can tell you that they are cute and comfortable, and the rest is up to you.
We’re not demanding or high maintenance. We just want workout bottoms that are comfortable, handle sweat well and look cute. Simple.
The Keith legging has the right amount of stretch to be comfortable, and the perfect amount of shaping to make your butt look cute.
Poly-spandex fabric and strategic color blocking make Beyond Yoga’s leggings as functional as they are flattering.
Beyond Yoga Alloy Ombré Leggings
When your fitness class has a live DJ, metallic leggings make total sense.
Your fashionista-at-the-gym look is now complete.
A blended fabric made of poly-wool-nylon-elastane makes the Adidas Icon leggings both comfy and durable.
