MAC x Aaliyah Makeup Collection

The MAC x Aaliyah Collection Celebrates the Timeless Beauty of an Icon in the making.

It’s easy to understand why a celebrity would want to launch her own beauty brand. Celebrity makeup products are big biz. Kylie Jenner’s line has grossed $420 million dollars in the past 18 months, and she is projected to become the youngest “self-made” billionaire within a few years. Jessica Alba’s “Honest Beauty,” Drew Barrymore’s “Flower,”  and Kat Von D’s eponymous line are all flourishing, not to mention Rihanna’s Fenty and Jennifer Lopez’s 70-piece collection with Inglot.

But can a celebrity makeup line be successful if the public figure who inspired it died tragically more than 15 years ago? The folks at MAC seem to think so. In June, they launched a capsule collection dedicated to the R&B singer Aaliyah who died in a 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas when she was 22 years old. For years, Aaliyah fans had petitioned MAC to move forward with the line, and ultimately, her brother Rashad worked with the company to create a color palette inspired by products he found in Aaliyah’s own makeup bag. The result is a fitting tribute to a promising young talent, a gift to Aaliyah’s tenacious fans, and a celebration of early-aught glamour. Here’s Elysian’s rundown of the collection:

EYE SHADOW

The palette of nine highly-pigmented, blendable powders can be applied wet or dry to create a natural look or a dramatic smoky eye. ($32, Bloomingdales.com)

MAC Lipstick Aaliyah Collection

The four distinctive shades with three different finishes are named after Aaliyah’s songs: “More Than A Woman” (crimson with a creamy finish), “Hot Like” (bright red with a creamy finish) and “Try Again” (matte beige), “Street Thing” (metallic gunmetal). ($18.50, Macys.com)

MAC Aaliyah Bronzing Powder in “Baby Girl”

Sweep into the hollows of cheeks and along the jawline for subtle contouring and a sunkissed look. ($28, Macys.com)

MAC Aaliyah Lip Pencil

Increase your lipstick’s staying power and add dimension to its shade. The lip pencil’s proprietary design is formulated to draw precise lines without skipping or dragging. Available in “Nevermore” (pure black) and “Follow Your Heart” (intense purple). ($18, Macys.com)

MAC Aaliyah Lip Glass $17.50

Use it over lipstick for a shiny finish, wear it with lip liner for a dramatic, high-gloss look, or wear it alone for a subtle sheen. Conditions lips with jojoba oil. Available in “1 in a Million” (burgandy), “Brooklyn Born”(cream metallic) and “Li Li’s Motor City” (peach). ($17.50, Bloomingdales.com)
