Our TOP 10 Dresses from the 72nd Annual Tony Awards

Shop the looks even if you can’t sing, dance or act!

The first TONY was awarded on April 6, 1947, named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, cofounder of the American Theatre Wing who passed away the year before.

Broadway performers are the professional athletes of the entertainment business. They perform eight shows per week, singing, dancing, or acting for two-and-a-half hours, not to mention the time they spend in wardrobe, makeup and rehearsals. Most entertainers spent ten years or more performing in regional or school theatre programs, attending hundreds of auditions before landing a coveted gig on Broadway.

But for the talented and fortunate few who make the highest cut, Broadway is theatre’s most elite and iconic showcase, a slice of America’s rich cultural heritage, and with the advent of provocative new shows like Hamilton, Broadway has become the cutting edge of live entertainment. Each of the past three years have been record-breaking for attendance and gross receipts on Broadway. On any given night, there are more spectators in Broadway theatres than at all of New York’s professional sports venues combined.

Ten million hardcore theatre fans and neophytes alike tuned in (or logged on) to see performances from the hottest shows on Broadway during the 72nd annual TONY awards ceremony. For aspiring musical theatre performers, there is no greater inspiration than seeing legendary stars of the stage walk the red carpet and perform for the TONYs Awards ceremony at Radio City. And those of us who are not inclined to sing, dance or act, (but appreciate those who do), find ourselves compiling a wish list of Broadway shows to catch, and admiring the TONY dresses on the red carpet. We might not all be able to perform like Broadway stars, but we can all take inspiration from their wardrobe.

Renee Fleming

Renee Fleming was nominated as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Nettie in “Carousel.” Fleming’s rousing rendition of the anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is a highlight of the show, and has been part of Fleming’s repertoire for years. She sang it at the nationally-televised September 11th Memorial concert in 2001, and the Obama inaugural gala in 2009.  Renee is exquisite in her hot pink gown, and we choose a similar, short-sleeved version from Jay Godfrey, paired with a Judith Leiber Couture clutch and Christian Louboutin crystal-embellished pumps.

Laurie Metcalf

At 62 years old, stage and screen actress Laurie Metcalf is finally winning the accolades for her theatre work that she’s deserved all along. Best known as Jackie Harris on the sitcom Roseanne (for which she won three Emmy Awards), Metcalf brought home her second TONY in a row this year when she was named Best Featured Actress in a Play for “Three Tall Women.” Metcalf is elegant in her black and white gown, and we love this similarly-tailored gown from Tadashi Shoji, also in black and white. We paired it with Jimmy Choo feathered sandals and an Edie Parker clutch.

Chita Rivera

Chita Rivera became a star in 1957 when she was cast in the role as Anita in the Broadway production of “West Side Story”, and she hasn’t stopped singing, dancing and acting since then. She accepted her Lifetime Achievement Award from the TONY committee in a ravishing red gown with a lace overlay. In homage to Rivera’s bold glamour, we chose a one-shoulder draped cocktail dress from Solace London with red Aquazzura sandals and a Judith Leiber Couture starfish clutch.

Lauren Ridloff

Also in red was Lauren Ridloff, a lovely ingenue who was nominated for best actress in a play for the revival of “Children of a Lesser God.” We love the simple silhouette of her cocktail dress, which inspired us to choose a Jason Wu taffeta dress, an Eric Javits clutch and Dolce & Gabbana stilettos.

Sara Bareilles

Brown is a very unusual color for evening wear, but we have to admit that “Waitress” composer and TONY host Sara Bareilles totally nailed her red carpet look. With a similar color scheme and silhouette, we chose this Elie Saab animal print halter along with embellished Jimmy Choo sandals and a Christian Louboutin spiked clutch.

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington is best known as Olivia Pope in ABC’s Scandal, but she made her Broadway debut in the David Mamet’s play “Race” in 2009. This fall, she will return to the stage in the play “American Son,” directed by TONY Winner Kenny Leon. Washington never disappoints with her red carpet ensembles, but we found her white-beaded pant suit-gown hybrid to be particularly fetching. Washington’s outfit is definitely one-of-a-kind, and it inspired us to select something white and flowy with a deep v-neck from Galvan that we paired with a Jimmy Choo clutch and silver Gianvito Rossi sandals.
