Rock Out in the Sun

Elysian’s Guide to Gearing Up for August’s Summer Musical Festivals

Getting outside and enjoying a summer concert is one of our favorite things to do all season. Coachella, Governors Ball and Bonnaroo are all in the rear-view, but there’s still plenty of time to get your summer concert on, and a lot of the artists you missed in June and July are cropping up at outdoor venues in August. Check out Elysian’s top four upcoming festivals along with our gear guide:

Grant Park ・ Chicago, August 2-5

The wildly divergent lineup includes Travis Scott, Arctic Monkeys and Khalid. Off-White designer Virgil Abloh is also scheduled to make an appearance. We’re not sure what he’s going to be doing but we’re willing to bet it will be as cheeky and brilliant as everything else he does. Because the festival is in Chicago’s Grant Park, a beautifully manicured public space within The Loop (and not in a muddy field in a remote village), we recommend you keep your attire hip but comfortable, which happens to be the metier of Off-White, so our ensemble is head-to-toe.

1.  Off White | Grey Ruffles Denim Skirt | $740 |
Denim is going all kinds of places it’s never been before, so why not take it to Lollapalooza?

2. Off White | Red Diagonal Mona Lisa Tee | $355 |
She’s still in the Louvre in Paris, but now she’s on your shirt, too.

3. Off White | Red & Black Quote Plaid Shirt | $620 |
A plaid button down keeps the chills away and is also guaranteed to keep the blahs away.

4. Off White | Logo Camera Bag | $610 |
Fill it with your essentials and go have fun in the sun. Totally your call whether to include a camera or just use the one on your phone.

5. Off White | Black Hiking Boots | $1,015 |
I know what you’re thinking: boots in summer? But anyone who has ever gotten their cute kicks stomped at an outdoor festival, can attest to the wisdom of summer boots.

Outside Lands
August 10-12 ・ Golden Gate Park in San Francisco

This summer. the beautiful people will unite in the west, Golden Gate Park to be precise. Janet Jackson, The Weeknd, and Florence + the Machine are headlining. The billing also includes dozens of other bands plus curated food, drink and art installations. Our advice: don’t be late, and dress cute.

1. Poppy Lissiman | Le Skinny Cat-Eye Sunglasses | $100 |
Skinny glasses are on the come-up, and Poppy Lissiman’s cat eyes are are a good match for a headpiece.

2. Lee Matthews | Mansfield Polka-Dot Maxi Dress | $645 |
This is the kind of dress we picture Florence Welch wearing to an outdoor concert when she’s not onstage performing with The Machine.

3. Jennifer Behr | Baby Lilly Hoops | $350 |
Hoops work with almost any ensemble, but are particularly fetching with the Treacy headpiece.

4. Philip Treacy | Crystal-Embellished Headpiece | $720 |
What do outdoor concerts and out-of-town weddings have in common? They are both colorful, hectic events where you know virtually no one, and can therefore take some chances with your personal style. Headpiece, anyone?

5. ATP Atelier | Rosa Cutout Slides | $230 |
Comfy enough for an outdoor concert and elegant enough for your Lee Matthews dress.

Incuya Festival
August 25-26 ・ Downtown Cleveland

The Buckeye State’s newest summer festival has a line-up that incorporates every modern subgenre, from New Order’s post-punk electronica to Booker T. Jones’ s funky jazz, and SZA’s soulful pop. With 10 hours of music per day performed by dozens of acts, there is surely something for everybody in Cleveland. While you’re in town, be sure to check out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

1. Alice + Olivia | Lace-Trimmed Camisole | $102 |
A pop of color and a touch of lace make this camisole so much cuter than a plain t-shirt.

2. Carven | Ruched Lace-Up Denim Shorts | $96 |
The side ruching gives these shorts a little fanciness.

3. Andy Wolf | Ojala Sunglasses | $385 |
Andy Wolf’s sunglasses are Instafamous. When they were spotted on a certain model at London Fashion Week, they sold out. Now they’re back in stock, so get them while you can.

4. Wicker Wings | Tao Rattan & Leather Belt Bag | $385 |
No one wants to schlep around a weighty tote at a festival, and many organizers don’t allow backpacks. So pare down your essentials to a phone, money, keys and a lipstick. Stuff it in the Wicker Wings belt bag and you’re good to go.

5. Clyde | Telescope Straw Hat | $245 |
A hat is a must-have at most festivals. This straw beauty from Clyde will not only keep the sun off your face, but you can tie it around your neck before you forget it somewhere in the crowd.

6. Givenchy | Urban Logo-Appliquéd Sneakers | $695 |

August 25-26 ・ Commodore Barry Park, Brooklyn

The Afropunk Festival celebrates music, culture and art and has been running strong since 2005. This year’s headliners are Janelle Monae, Jaden and Willow Smith and Ibeyi. Dozens of local and national bands are scheduled to perform on the festival’s side stages, but the real action is in off-stage where you will see the most audacious, vibrant, expressive ensembles on your fellow attendees. Be sure to check out the Afropunk marketplace where select vendors sell handmade soaps, jewelry, clothing, and accessories.

1. Valentino | Patchwork Shorts | $774 |
We don’t usually expect eclectic street style from Valentino, but we love surprises.

2. Alexander McQueen | Embellished Bustier | $1,298 |
McQueen’s exquisite bustier will put some zip into your wardrobe.

3. Oscar de la Renta | Gold-Plated Fish Earrings | $290 |
Sun protection? Check. Style? Check. You are now ready to dance in the sun.

4. Prada | Cloudburst Sneakers | $750 |
They look clunky in the pics but on your feet, they feel like a dream.

5. JW Anderson | Disc Shoulder Bag | $1,455 |
It has room for your essentials, a sleek design to go with your ensemble, and it won’t flop open when you’re waving your hair like Willow.

6. Givenchy | Cat-Eye Sunglasses | $445 |
With all of the crazy styles at Afropunk, you’ll want at least one statement piece to bring your outfit over the edge.
