The Hottest Miami Looks At Miami Fashion Week

It’s Fashion Week in Miami, But It’s the City of Beautiful People All Year Round.

Miami became known as The Magic City because of its population explosion after World War II. Then it was called the City of Vice (as much for its crime rate as for the popular 80s television show, Miami Vice). Nowadays, amidst the high rises of downtown, the bars of South Beach, the cafes of Little Havana and the shops of Coconut Grove, Miami has morphed into a city of undeniable style, a true fashion capital, with a whole new nickname: The City of Beautiful People. Equipped with its own Fashion Week (the first week of June), boutiques showcasing local designers, plus a bevy of fabulous style bloggers, Miami has developed its own distinct dress code. Whether you are planning a visit, or just want to do the Beautiful People thing in your hometown, here is our snapshot of the Miami look.

Ruffles rule the world

They may show up on a sleeve, along a hemline or down the bodice of a dress, but in any case, ruffles are never a bad idea. Perhaps it is a testament to Miami’s Cuban influence — more than half the city is of Cuban descent — or maybe it’s just because ruffles catch the breeze and keep you cool on a hot day. In any case, ruffles are a staple of Miami style.

Florals are to Miami what Black Knits are to New York and Silk Scarves are to Paris

In other words, florals are so essential to the Miami style book, that nobody even thinks about it. It’s what you wear when you’re not sure what to wear, because there is a floral for every occasion. And if your floral garment also has ruffles, then consider yourself doubly blessed.

Dramatic Sunnies

Sunglasses in Miami are like umbrellas in London: you’re gonna need it, so don’t leave home without it. But sunglasses are not just utilitarian. It’s more a matter of style meets function. In other words, they must look good and block the UVA/B’s. We know everyone keeps saying that small sunglasses are in this season, but we can’t help but feel inspired by the sunglass wardrobe of Miami Style blogger Bianka Walker @thebiankastyle who never met a pair of shades that were too big or too bold.

Sneakers go with skirts, and espadrilles go with Everything

Miami isn’t as much of a walking city as Chicago, but it’s not as much of a driving city as Los Angeles. So comfortable shoes are not a bad idea. Cute kicks or colorful espadrilles work with almost everything.

Bags aren’t just for holding stuff. They also need to say something.

In other words, statement bags are big in Miami. The bags themselves tend to be on the small to medium size. It’s hot, so nobody wants to tote around a heavy load. And everybody keeps an emergency bikini and towel in the trunk of their car anyway.
