Innovative Designers like Stella McCartney have made animal-friendly fabrics hotter than leather.
Let’s face it, vegan leather has a bawdy past. It came into the world as a cheap substitute for cowhide, and it was used only in the manufacturing of substandard garments and accessories. Nicknamed “pleather” (plastic + leather), the faux animal fabric was easily scratched, torn and melted. It was the exact opposite of leather, which is so durable that motorcycle riders wear it from head to toe to protect themselves in the case of a fall. As animal cruelty protesters and environmentalists began to adapt savvier tactics in the late 1990s, a new, upscale market was born for garments and accessories made with faux leather. It took a few decades to get it right, but there is no denying that vegan leather has arrived. Whether you are strictly against the consumption of animal products or just a dedicated follower of fashion, it’s time to give “pleather” another chance.
