Youthful skin starts from within

Jump start your healthy skincare routine without the huge price tag.

We have all been guilty of buying a product guaranteeing us radiant-looking skin, and we’ve all fallen victim to a celebrity beauty trend. But from my personal experience, the ideal way to combat the aging process and achieve flawless skin starts from within.

While getting older is inevitable, aging is optional. The best way to achieve that radiant complexion you’ve always wanted is through healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.

Below are my top tips on how you can manage your body internally to get the external results you really want.

Getting the most out of your diet

Eating natural, powerhouse foods packed with vitamins and antioxidants can be the difference between breakouts or wrinkles and a smooth, glowing complexion. Dermatologists have found that the major antioxidants (vitamins A, C and E) can protect your skin by limiting the production of free radicals — harmful byproducts of sunlight, smoke and pollution. Free radicals gobble up collagen and elastin, the fibers that support skin structure, causing wrinkles and other signs of aging. These vital vitamins can be found in a number of fruits, vegetables and healthy unsaturated fats. Vitamins A and C can be found in fruits, especially citrus fruits, and vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and leafy greens. Vitamin E can be found in nuts, seeds, olives, spinach, asparagus and vegetable oils. Introducing healthy fats in your diet can also help achieve that flawless glow you’re looking for. Olive oil, avocado and nuts can aid in your body’s natural absorption of those complexion-friendly antioxidants and vitamins. Plus, these healthy fats strengthen cell membranes to create a dewier, suppler look.

Hydration is your best friend

Simply put, healthy skin is hydrated skin. If you really want a flawless complexion, you need to make sure that you’re drinking enough H20. Without proper hydration, your skin can become dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. If you’re looking for an easy intake method, stick to the 8-by-8 rule — drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water every day. Change things up a bit by tossing in a lemon wedge or splash of fruit juice.

Going the extra mile

Pair your new healthy eating habits with regular exercise to score healthy skin. By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish and revitalize skin cells as well as carry away waste products from working cells.

Clock those Z’s!

While you’re asleep, your body repairs and restores itself. During REM sleep especially, there is a rise in growth hormones, which allow damaged cells to repair. Poor sleeping habits can increase stress hormones, hurting your skin’s quality and contributing to acne.

When you start to eat a healthy, anti-aging diet, you will see the results immediately. The best results compound over time, however. While there is merit in certain beauty products, spa treatments and great genetics, personal experience has shown me that healthy skin starts with a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your skin from within.
