At that time, the airport, established in 1927 as South Carolina’s first airport, had languished with minimal investment or improvements for nearly 50 years. The airport, though a historic landmark, had largely fallen behind in terms of infrastructure and modern capabilities.

In an extraordinary act of commitment to his community, Simpson agreed to take the role for a symbolic salary of just $1 per year. His motivation was not for personal gain, but rather for the future of Spartanburg and the surrounding region. He set out to lead the charge in revitalizing the airport, understanding that it could become a vital economic asset for the area.

Under Simpson’s direction, the airport has experienced a remarkable transformation.
