a Legacy of Leadership: Major General Darwin H. Simpson’s Impact on Spartanburg and ELYSIAN

by Amber Edwards

As ELYSIAN magazine marks a significant milestone with its 10-year celebration, we are honored to pay tribute to one of the most influential figures in Spartanburg’s development: Major General Darwin H. Simpson. His extraordinary leadership and dedication have not only transformed the local airport but also played a key role in ELYSIAN’s growth and success.

A legacy of service and innovation, Major General Simpson’s journey began in 2009 when he was asked to take on the role of director at Spartanburg’s downtown airport. At that time, the airport, established in 1927 as South Carolina’s first airport, had languished with minimal investment or improvements for nearly 50 years. The airport, though a historic landmark, had largely fallen behind in terms of infrastructure and modern capabilities.

In an extraordinary act of commitment to his community, Simpson agreed to take the role for a symbolic salary of just $1 per year. His motivation was not for personal gain, but rather for the future of Spartanburg and the surrounding region. He set out to lead the charge in revitalizing the airport, understanding that it could become a vital economic asset for the area.

Under Simpson’s direction, the airport has experienced a remarkable transformation. Through tireless efforts to secure funding, implement key projects, and attract investment, he has turned the airport into a major hub for business aviation. Today, around 90 percent of the airport’s operations support corporate and private aviation, contributing significantly to Spartanburg’s economic growth. His leadership has not only elevated the airport’s status but has also positioned it as a critical asset in Spartanburg’s development.

Simpson’s influence extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He also served as chairman of the Board for the Spartanburg Humane Society, where he worked to advance the organization’s mission to promote the welfare of animals in the community. His compassion for both people and animals further underscores his commitment to improving the lives of those around him.

As a longtime supporter of ELYSIAN, he has been instrumental in the magazine’s growth. For years, he generously offered his services to the ELYSIAN team, flying them across the country for key meetings, events, and strategic initiatives. His unwavering support and commitment to the brand have been invaluable, ensuring that ELYSIAN had the resources to expand its vision and reach.

As ELYSIAN’s 10-year celebration approaches, we are deeply grateful for the contributions of Major General Darwin H. Simpson. His visionary leadership in transforming the Spartanburg airport, his dedication to animal welfare, and his consistent support of our endeavors exemplify the spirit of excellence and service that ELYSIAN strives to uphold. This year, we celebrate not only a decade of success but also the lasting impact of individuals like Simpson, whose actions have shaped the community and influenced the trajectory of ELYSIAN in profound ways.

The kickoff celebration of our 10-Year Anniversary is dedicated to honoring Major General Darwin H. Simpson, a true pillar of Spartanburg and a vital force behind ELYSIAN’s journey. His legacy is one of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his community, and it is with great respect and admiration that we commemorate his invaluable contributions.
