Fashion is more than fabric and thread—it is a language, a narrative, a reflection of culture and identity. For Halynka Shunevych, fashion is also an act of perseverance, a tribute to her Ukrainian heritage, and a gift of gratitude to those who stand with her homeland. Her exquisite embroidery, steeped in tradition yet boldly modern, has captivated audiences worldwide, from the grand runways of Paris to the heart of New York Fashion Week.

Born in Ukraine, Halynka’s journey to becoming a designer was anything but conventional. She pursued a degree in computer engineering from Lviv Polytechnic National University, followed by a law degree. Yet, her heart always belonged to fashion. Growing up with limited means, she dreamt of elegant dresses but had little opportunity to own them. So, she began creating her own. With a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, she purchased an embroidery machine and embarked on a self-taught journey to digitize traditional Ukrainian patterns. What started with small accessories soon evolved into intricately embroidered garments, blending historical motifs with contemporary design.

Despite her undeniable talent, Halynka never set out to become a fashion designer. She simply followed her passion for elegance. While living in the United States, she invested in embroidery machines and refined her technique. When she returned to Ukraine in 2012, she brought back her equipment, unaware that she was about to embark on a journey that would redefine her life. By 2013, she was gradually stepping into the world of fashion, and in 2017, she debuted her first major collection at a wedding specialty show near Hyriv. She was the only designer showcased, and her urbanized approach to traditional embroidery received widespread acclaim from Ukrainian media.

Then, war arrived. Like many artists, Halynka put everything aside. There was no space for creativity amid devastation. But in 2022, a moment of inspiration reignited her purpose. When Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Ukraine—a courageous act of solidarity—Halynka felt compelled to honor his support. She painstakingly embroidered a traditional Ukrainian shirt for him, sourcing white linen from Poland due to fabric shortages. That single piece marked the beginning of a new chapter. With every stitch, she expressed her nation’s resilience, gratitude, and unwavering spirit.

Soon, she was crafting embroidered gifts for world leaders, including dignitaries from Poland, Slovakia, Japan, Canada, Malaysia, and even President Biden, gifting a total of 15 embroidered shirts to world leaders. When she was in Paris for the Flying Solo show at Paris Fashion Week, she was so determined to get a shirt and letter of thanks into the hands of President Emmanuel Macron that she boldly approached the Élysée Palace, where, against all odds, she was permitted to deliver the embroidered shirt and letter as a token of appreciation. Her artistry is not just fashion—it is a message of courage and cultural pride.

Halynka’s work soon gained international attention, leading to interviews on major Ukrainian television networks, live appearances on National TV during Vyshyvanka Day, and features in global publications.

In September 2024, Halynka’s talent graced the prestigious CatWalk FurBaby show at New York Fashion Week, presented by ELYSIAN, DRC Ventures, and The Root Brands. She designed a breathtaking piece for model Reese Connor, who walked the runway alongside Kirk, a wire-haired terrier representing the WLS Foundation. Inspired by the strength of first responders, her design incorporated shades of green reminiscent of the Carpathian Forest and circular motifs found in nature—symbols of courage, grace, and resilience.

By February 2025, Halynka was once again captivating audiences at ATF Fashion House during New York Fashion Week. At the Oculus World Trade Center, she unveiled a collection that masterfully fused traditional embroidery techniques passed down through generations with avant-garde design. Her intricate cutouts, sculptural silhouettes, and impeccable detailing left attendees mesmerized. Each piece, crafted with precision and passion, told a story of heritage meeting innovation, of history woven into modern luxury.

Halynka embodies her imagination, feelings and knowledge in the traditional Ukrainian embroidery and elegant modern clothing. Her collection truly exemplifies high fashion luxury. From the opulent silk and sustainable fabrics to the meticulous detailing, each piece exudes sophistication and artistry.  The hand cut Richelieu and unique designs contribute to a sense of exclusivity and elegance that is synonymous with luxury fashion. Each piece exudes sophistication and artistry.

As Halynka herself reflects, “It is a great honor to represent Ukraine and tell the world about us in the language of fashion. Despite the difficult conditions, we will win.” Her creations are more than garments; they are a testament to the resilience of her people and the enduring power of art.

For those who have had the privilege of witnessing her work, Halynka Shunevych is more than a designer—she is a visionary, a storyteller, and an inspiration to women everywhere. Her unwavering determination, artistic mastery, and deep cultural pride serve as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, beauty and creativity can shine through.

Thank you, Halynka, for sharing your artistry with the world, for inspiring generations, and for proving that true elegance is not just about fashion—it is about strength, history, and the courage to dream.
