April 20, 2022, marked a turning point in the world of horse rescue—a day that would inspire the creation of Sweet Mercies Rescue Ranch. While visiting a holding facility, Mariah Joseph and her team noticed a horse lying in a pen, barely able to breathe. Others walked by, indifferent to her suffering, but Mariah and her team recognized the urgency. With coordinated effort, they moved the other horses and negotiated with facility management for hours to secure the emaciated animal. She was so weak that she had to be physically dragged to safety. A veterinarian confirmed the worst: the horse was suffering, and the only mercy she could be offered was release from pain. In her final moments, she was named Mercy—a symbol of the compassion she so desperately needed. Though her life was brief, Mercy’s story ignited a mission: every horse deserves care, dignity, and love.
Inspired by that moment, Mariah founded Sweet Mercies Rescue Ranch in Glen Rose, Texas. The ranch’s mission is simple yet profound: rescue neglected animals, rehabilitate them, and help them find loving forever homes. Since its inception, Sweet Mercies has provided refuge to equines, exotic animals, dogs, cats, and goats, creating a safe haven for those who have no voice to advocate for themselves. The ranch has rescued over 300 animals since 2022, each one a testament to Mercy’s enduring legacy.
Sweet Mercies Rescue Ranch isn’t just about rescuing animals; it’s about healing people too. The ranch offers Equine Assisted Lessons and coaching for individuals who have faced trauma or hardship. Mariah explains, “Growing up, I went through many dark years. Sometimes the only thing I looked forward to was going out to a ranch where I could love on the horses and donkeys. I could feel the pit leave my stomach, my heart rate slow, and my fear and anxiety disappear. That was my safe space. Now, I can help others through their dark years using the same thing that saved me. It’s a full-circle moment.” Each lesson, priced at $40, allows participants to connect with animals and experience a kind of healing that words alone cannot convey.
Recently, Sweet Mercies has embarked on an ambitious expansion, transforming a new property with rolling hills into a sanctuary capable of housing even more animals. The ranch is in the process of installing electricity and water infrastructure, along with fencing and new structures, to create safe paddocks for blind horses, kennels with runs for rescued dogs, and dedicated sanctuary pastures. The ranch also hopes to establish a pasture for 5–10 wild horses to live out their days freely, along with offering educational tours to raise awareness about responsible animal care and adoption.
The vision is vast, requiring years of dedication, but Mariah and her team are undeterred. They see the beauty and potential in the land, knowing that each animal saved, each person healed, and each lesson taught is a step toward a world where compassion for animals and humans alike is the norm. Sweet Mercies Rescue Ranch stands as a testament to the power of love, dedication, and the belief that even one life, like Mercy’s, can spark a movement that changes countless others.
The goal of Sweet Mercies Rescue Ranch is to rescue, rehabilitate, and give as many animals as possible the love they deserve before finding their forever homes. If you’d like to support their mission, you can get involved by donating or adopting—and help carry on the legacy Mercy inspired.
