The renowned live artist Amy Burkman treated the audience to the speed paintings of both the front and back covers, of the ELYSIAN’s Fall 2022 “Travel & Technology” Issue. The longer painting, beginning with a blank canvas was transformed in front of an audience of over one hundred people over a two-hour span. Then, in ten minutes, to the cadence of music, the cover image took place before our eyes. Amy “speed pained” an upside-down painting which was turned right side up, to the audience’s surprise as they gasped at the remarkable composite of the front cover of Jan Zakin herself. A magical experience for everyone!

As more survivors are lost to us every year now, we so often look to art and culture to preserve first-hand accounts of remembrance, as humans have been doing for millennia. Films and the newer immersive “virtual reality” experiences both are key ways that survivors’ stories are shared today, but nothing compares to hearing from an old friend who says, “That’s my story too.”
