Rebuilding Lives for War-Torn Ukrainians: The Protez Foundation

by Amber Edwards
The Protez Foundation is a vital nonprofit organization committed to aiding Ukrainians who have lost limbs due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Founded with a mission to restore dignity and hope, the foundation offers free, high-quality prosthetics to Ukrainian children, civilians, and soldiers injured during the conflict. By providing state-of-the-art prosthetics, personalized training, and ongoing support, the foundation ensures that recipients regain mobility and confidence, enabling them to rebuild their lives.
Karen Floyd, Publisher of ELYSIAN Magazine and Executive Producer of Ukraine: For the Children, experienced firsthand the profound impact of the Protez Foundation’s work when she was reunited with Ukrainian soldier Sasha at the foundation’s Oakdale, MN location. This encounter deepened her appreciation for the organization’s mission and the transformative effect it has on those it serves.
Operating primarily from the United States, the Protez Foundation facilitates the travel of amputees to receive prosthetics. The comprehensive rehabilitation process includes fitting for prosthetics, personalized physical therapy, and emotional support. Once back in Ukraine, patients continue to receive follow-up care, ensuring their progress is sustained. To date, the foundation has treated over 250 patients, opened three clinics, and trained over 80 specialists, reflecting its growing impact and commitment to long-term recovery.
The need for such services is immense, with an estimated 59,000 Ukrainians requiring prosthetics due to war-related injuries. The Protez Foundation’s work extends beyond physical restoration; it also addresses the profound psychological impact of war-related injuries. By offering mental health support, the foundation helps victims navigate the trauma of their experiences, fostering resilience and a sense of community among survivors.
One of the most touching aspects of the Protez Foundation’s work is the personal connection it maintains with each patient. Stories like those of Vadym, a Ukrainian soldier who lost both legs while defending his country, and Artem, a young soccer player whose dreams were shattered when a drone strike led to the loss of his leg, highlight the profound impact of the foundation’s efforts. These individuals, and many others, have been given a second chance at life through the foundation’s dedication and the support of donors.
The Protez Foundation is a testament to the power of compassion and the international community’s ability to unite in the face of adversity. By providing essential services and fostering a supportive network, the foundation is not only helping individuals heal but also contributing to the broader recovery and resilience of the Ukrainian people.
