A Mother’s Day in the Life

by Elysian Magazine

Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate every mother, daughter, friend, aunt, grandmother, and even teacher. We began to honor moms and women in our lives on this holiday in 1907 and haven’t stopped since. For a day’s activities and outfits that are stylish, we’ve gathered some female-founded and women-focused brands for you. Celebrate yourself and the women you love while supporting the community of women around the world.

What to wear to start your day? The sister duo Ilona Hamer and Peta Heinsen created Matteau, an Australian label, in 2015 and say that their own mother is their “biggest source of inspiration.” They expanded from an original line of swimwear and now encompass timeless outfits needed for a getaway or warm weather activity. They embody an Australian ethos with their heavy emphasis on nature and romantic details in their designs, meant to work for a range of different body types.

Strolling with your special ones to enjoy the blooming flowers and lovely weather is the very epitome of the month of May. Botanically inspired prints are at the heart of Agua by Agua Bendita, the brainchild of Columbian natives Mariana Hinestroza and Catalina Álvarez. Their brand works in partnership with female artisans in Medellín, Columbia, and is the embodiment of their Latin-inspired celebration style.

Mirth (see top photo) was founded by Katie McClure and her sister Erin McClure Breen, as they were on a trip to India, and this brand also celebrates nature and comfort with its aesthetic. This resort line features handmade kaftans and equally comfortable outfits made by artisans in India. A percentage of all sales goes back to the village in which their ethically produced kaftans are made to support educational initiatives in the area.

Sydney Evans is the creation of Rosanne Karmes, an L.A.-based jewelry designer who named her company after her two children. Her whimsical and elegant, fashion-forward pieces have a large following, including the likes of Gweneth Paltrow and Rihanna. Her Mother’s Day collection includes something for moms of young children and older — and even for “moms” of four-legged furbabies.

Whether your evening consists of a quiet, candle-lit repast or a bustling banquet with children or friends, Italian clothing and homewares company La Double J’s bright colors and vintage-yet-trendy prints are ones to watch out for. The brand was conceptualized by journalist J.J. Martin when she left Harper’s Bazaar to collaborate with Mantero, the Italian silk manufacturer behind Dior and Pucci. We love their dramatic and bold textiles, whether for table, bedroom, or you!

As you’re curling up at the end of the day, you’ll certainly want to reach for comfort from Desmond & Dempsey. This “fancy pyjamas” brand was founded by Molly Desmond when she took Joel Dempsey’s shirt for herself to every sleepover because she couldn’t find a sleep shirt as luxurious as his anywhere else. Her line of chic “pyjamas” are made of the finest cottons and linens, with seriously fun prints and patterns that are hand painted in London.
