There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

My writing begins with a simple thought that refuses to stay quiet. It gathers weight until it demands release. I sit down at the computer to begin. What most people do not know is that I am a terrible typist. In law school there were no laptops; everything was written by hand. Later, paralegals and typists transcribed our dictation. I never truly learned to type the way the world now expects. I struggle—the slow pecking, the constant corrections. And people in my office watch, horrified. Perhaps it is this ineptness that draws me to new tools. And yet the stories still need to be told.
Today a new tool has entered the conversation—artificial intelligence. For some it arrives with apprehension. For others, with curiosity. I find myself somewhere in between, which is usually where the most interesting paths begin. For me, AI at its best is simply another translator. It does not replace the story. It does not invent the courage, the resilience, or the insight. Those remain ours.
Still, tools can dull as easily as they assist. Dependency on AI can quiet the creative mind, leaving the pages filled with words, saying nothing. Without human connection we become beings with glossy stares, the warmth gone, the spark and soul behind the smile missing. Creating requires effort; the ease of letting the machine do the work encourages emotional disconnection and distances us from the raw, creative self. Empathy thins. Technology, including AI, can help us translate and reach further, but it must never anesthetize the human spirit or become one more layer that keeps us from one another or our authentic selves.
Eleven years ago, when we launched ELYSIAN, the tools of storytelling were already shifting. Print still held the weight of permanence, while the digital world quietly expanded the reach of a single conversation. What has never changed is the heart of our work: women inspiring women through authentic stories, carefully curated and shared with intention.
I have spent a lifetime listening to women. As a young prosecutor I heard stories that needed to be given voice. As a publisher I have sat across from extraordinary women whose experiences, once shared, have the power to shift perspective and open possibility. Each time the goal has been the same: to translate what is real, lived, and human into something that connects. The tools will continue to change. The necessity of the story will not. And so we keep writing, keep listening, and keep making space for words that refuse to stay silent.
As we move forward, our commitment remains unchanged. ELYSIAN will continue to be a place where women’s voices are elevated with care—whether those voices arrive through the pages of the magazine, a documentary, a conversation, or whatever new form storytelling takes next. The medium may evolve. The mission does not.
Thank you for walking this path with us. May we remain curious, intentional, and always rooted in the stories that connect us.
With much love,

Karen Floyd,
ELYSIAN Publisher & Founder
